    6230 Certificate

Hi, i'm developing a banking application which is running
on nokia 6230 phone. The application is using SMS to
access the database and i need to avoid the confirmation
dialog. I've tried to sign and install my MID suite but
still appear the alert message, i have checked the application
access menu, and the option "Always allowed" is disabled.
I've read that this phone cannot accept X.509 certificate,
only accepts WPKI, so the cuestion is where can i find
information about creating that Certificate ? How can
i Convert without have to pay my X.509 to WPKI.

    Please give me some light!!

    Thanks,
    Luis.

    Re: 6230 Certificate

The root certificate store is closed, so you cannot add new certificates in there to be used for signing (meaning that you cannot use keys created by you to sign your midlets). You should get a certificate from a CA which has a certificate installed on your device.

    Re: 6230 Certificate

Thanks for your reply Hartti. Let me understand, is it impossible to get a temporary Certificate to test the application? The customer doesn't want
to buy one just to test the beta application.
I can see several certificates under the menu Security settings -> Authority Certificates -> Certificate List. Most of them allow to do an Application signing, this means that i can only use those Certificates, but is there a way to get any for free??
CAcerts.org (http://www.cacert.org ) offers certificates for free , can i use this kind of cert to sign my Suite ?

Hartti, please give me as more explanations as you can, I know this is a public forum but in my country i don't have a nokia business partner to get support, so i only have this kind of support :-)

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Luis,

If u can't transfer ur own certificates into ur mobile then I don't think u can test a free signed application.

    Re: 6230 Certificate

Hi Wang, so which would be the steps to sign my application for 6230?

    1. Buy a CA certificate from Verisign
    2. They will give me instructions in order to sign my suite

Hartti said that the model 6230 has the store closed, also said
that the CA has a certificate installed on my phone.

    Re: 6230 Certificate

You need a certificate that the "phone" will trust, ie. signed by a authority from a phone certificate store or any other authority that itself has its cacert signed by any of these authorities.

Likely you also need a tool that will generate a private key and a certificate request for you (such as Openssl, keytool from JDK, ...). You send the request to an authority to have it signed. A decent authority should have a guide for this, I assume.

Roughly, when you have your certificate, you will add it to JAD file base64-encoded together with digital signature which you'll get by signing the JAR file with your private key. I believe this is well documented in many places, you should easily find it.. eg. http://java.sun.com/j2me/docs/wtk2.2.../security.html

If you come across a free/cheap way to get certificate good for midlet signing, let us know, please...

    Unhappy Re: 6230 Certificate

hmm... I tried with several certificates without success. In fact, i've read many threads with this issue, for example:

    http://discussion.forum.nokia.com/fo...ad.php?t=57294
    http://discussion.forum.nokia.com/fo...ad.php?t=56979
    http://discussion.forum.nokia.com/fo...ad.php?t=76847
    http://discussion.forum.nokia.com/fo...ad.php?t=71093

It seems to be a unsolved mystery :-)

I couldn't find any success story for 6230 in this forum!

hnipak, have you seen this site:
    http://www.freecerts.com/index.html

It offers free root certificates for tests purposes. I imagine that this kind of cert can be used for developers, am i wrong?

There is no way. There is no way. There is no way. There is …

You have to go for thawte or VeriSign. The common Java Verified is not supported by your phone. You can buy a code signing certificate yourself and if I am not wrong, you can use that for all your MIDlets, so you can provide these (signed demo) services to other customers, too – correct me please, If I am wrong on this. So the price of thawte is quite reasonable for two years, isn't it?

Alternatively, you can go for the Nokia Series 40 Platform 2.0 SDK (Version 1.1 = Nokia 6230) and adjust the security settings as it would be for 3rd party trust level. There you could even install a self-signed certificate via its web browser. Then enable it for code-signing with Menu > Web > Settings > Security settings > Authority certificates > Certificate list > your self-signed certificate > Options > Select use > Application signing. However, this does not work in a real device.
