Despite these APIs are protected in most cases, there are a lot of such clients for Java out there already. Additionally with a Nokia phone, I would recommend to use the internal OMA IMPS (wireless viallage) client. This is the future, how instant messaging is done on mobile phones. Go and create a IMPS server, although, there are some of those available already, too (YamiGo, SmartVAS, Openwave, Now Telco and Nokia has one too, if I am not wrong).

The user (interface) experience of you MIDlet must be outstanding, if you want to compete with all the various solutions successfully out there. I think, YamiGo does everything you are looking for already for free. The server could be much better, however, to use it is "free".

YamiGo is a proxy for MSN, AIM and ICQ. So the IMPS integrated in mobile phones can be used to access anything, if your IMPS server does the translastion. I would not use J2ME for this on a Nokia, especially because there are a lot of such J2ME tools already out there. Just my thoughts on your question…no real help, I know, however, arguments which might be worth to be considered.

I think you have to enter a partner programm to access MSN APIs. I think it's called Windows Live Partner or something.

    hi cheongkaishien,
u can read and use jabber server like open fire and XMPP protocol,,that use socket connection and XML. it can use to connect to MSN, YAHOO, GMAIL, etc. so if u want to developt mobile instant messageing, all u need just make the client and connect that to that server. check this link for current info : XMPP and openfire site

    may it helps
