    Displaying screens as tabs

    Hi All,

I want to display screens in the form of tabs, as displayed on the top of the screen in the Series 60 phones.

Actualy, my application may have different number of screens, and I want the user to scroll between the screens using left and right arrow keys, as is done in Series 60 phones.

Can this tabbed pane be implemented in J2ME, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of this implementation.

    Regards,
    Ashish

    Re: Displaying screens as tabs

    Hi Ashish,

AFAIK this is not available yet, out-of-the-box, for JME. However, eSWT (eRCP) may provide that for CDC in the future. Take a look at the link below:

    eSWT Programming Guide
    http://www.eclipse.org/ercp/eSWT-Programming-Guide.pdf

"MultiPageDialog – This dialog allows the application to show multiple pages which are
displayed one at a time. It provides function similar to TabFolder in desktop SWT, but in a more platform dependent fashion. The more restricted nature of this dialog over TabFolder allows it to map more readily to native platform functionality."

    Re: Displaying screens as tabs

    Thanks juarez for the information.

Does that mean it can not be implemented at all in J2ME (mobile phones), or there is some other way of implementing this.

One way that I can think of is to provide a command "Next Form" that will take user to the forms one after another, or one more way is to provide the list of all the forms that are to be shown and display the one user wants to view.

Thankyou, for the answer, but I would also like to know, the advantages and disadvantages of this method.

Obviously, this provides a better look and feel to the user, but technically what all constraints are to be kept in mind when implementing the application using "MultiPageDialog".

    Regards,
    Ashish

j2mepolish has a class to implement tab form. For more information, visit their website, www.j2mepolish.org. It is free for non-commercial development.

If you really want to use such tabled GUI, take a look at the kAWT library: http://www.trantor.de/kawt/

Just to get the idea about what you can do with it: http://www.trantor.de/kawt/demos/index.html

And it's GPL-free for private or educational uses.

    Hello everyone,

what is the status of tabs in J2ME today? Can we have tabs in non-canvas displays?
