    TimeZone information

    Hi All,

I am residing in India and my TimeZone offset is GMT +05:30.

I want to retreive this information from the J2ME application.

I am using the TimeZone class provided in the java.util package.

When I write this particular piece of code
    Code:
    TimeZone.getDefault().getID()
    It returns
    Code:
    GMT +05:00
but not the value I want and hence it is returning the offset value accordingly (30 minutes behind the actual value).

Is there any workaround of finding this information from the J2ME application.

    Regards,
    Ashish

What phone model are you using? Please send also the firmware version (press *#0000# while in the idle screen)

    Re: TimeZone information

Ashish, I have quickly tested this and it seems there is problem on some S60 devices in this regard. Also the getRawOffset() returns incorrect information for these time zones. I am not aware of a workaround yet. I need to spend some more time investigating this.

    Thanks for reporting this!

    Hi Hartti,

    Thanks for acknowledging the problem.

I hope that the problem will get resolved soon.

Can you please send me the list of S60 devices having this problem.

    Regards,

    Re: TimeZone information

Ashish, all the S60 devices I have tested so far have produced the incorrect result for this. I have generated an error report on this but I am not sure when fix is available and for which devices. I am in the process of submitting this to the known issues documentation

    Re: TimeZone information

This is apparently a Known Issue for certain S60 phones. I found it on E65 as well. It is found to occur whenever the timezone has a fractional content e.g when timeZone.getID() gives "GMT+5:30", "GMT+10:30", "GMT+9:30", "GMT+5:30" etc. It simply chops off the fractional part. Cheers.

    Re: TimeZone information

On the subject of Series 60 time-zone issues, the 6600 has problems with negative time-zones (West of Greenwich).

Symptom: NullPointerException. Some time-zone aware API methods will return null.

This device was sold primarily in Europe and Asia, so this is not normally a problem. However, you may experience this problem when testing time-zone sensitive applications destined for the North American market. The North American variant of this device is the 6620, which I believe does not have the same issue. The problem seems unique to the 6600.

Action: None. This is a device limitation, and there is no workaround.

    Cheers,
    Graham.
