    Exactly.

If a dns is necessary, where is the DNS value set in the nokia (how can I find the value to check?)

    Thank you!

Try to change the ip address to "long integer" as
rules says. Some functions expect only the long
    integer corerrespondence of the "abc.ddd.ddd.dd"
    ip address value.

I use the ip address in a string

    conn = (SocketConnection) Connector.open("socket://"+url);
.. so this shouldn't really matter ... or did I misunderstand you?

    Hi peterdickten

I messed up the java and C++ sections. Yes, your case is Java, not C++. I am verry sorry that i posted information that was not answer on your Java case.

    But in your case.
Very offen is easier to use http protocol instead of tcp when woking
    with J2ME environment.

No problem, I was a little bit confused about your post, but since I try to get the app running on the phone, this is standard :-)

Yes, I would love to do that, but I can't because the serverside can't handle http :-(

    Thank you,
    Peter

    Ok peterdickten
So your case is, that you have "old" socket server app runnig
on the pc server and you are trying to connect to that
old software with your new phone app that uses tcp.

    Exactly.
The serverside software is not my task - it would have been easy for me to implement this in java ...

    Hi again peterdickten
It is hard way to discuss when i do not know
the real situation going on your software.
But, you can try this network "sniffer" that hopefully
collects the tcp traffic from your computer and
receices traffic from remote tcp server if traffic
happens. So with the tool, you can check what is happening on your computer and what is not happening.

Is it a local IP (010.x, 192.x)? You know what a local IP address is, do you?
Send me your URL via a private message. Additionally, the idea of turnabull2 does not hurt. Send the IP with three digits each so 000.111.222.333 for example.

Furthermore, I would switch to a domain name later. When you use IPs addresses, you do not need DNS, however, DNS is configured automatically at connection startup and allows it to change the server operator.

No its not a local ip adress ;-)

And I can connect using telnet from other computer outside my network; the serverside is really not the problem ....

Sure, I just wanted to solve it with an ip adress and then switch to an dns server

Re: SocketConnection - works only in the emulator :-(

Peter, there is plenty of midlets you can use for testing. http://www.hartti.com/FirstExample.jar is the most simple (and most awfully coded) midlet to test if you have network settings correctly. The only think it does is to connect to network and try to read a text file from a server using http. if it succeeds, the file "Welcome to MIDP programming" is displayed on the screen. No threads were used in this midlet, so nothing will be displayed until the file is read...

If you do not see anything, the network settings for midlets are not correct.

Re: SocketConnection - works only in the emulator :-(

Thank you for the tool recommendation!

    One more question:
Do you know a similar tool for tcp/ip (socket) connection tests?

AFAIK tcp/ip and http are done in a different way on a mobile phone.
While trying the app with a different phone (bit same model) we noticed that the phone seems to open a WAP (!) connection. So a test doing a http test would succeed with a wap connection (I guess), but a tcpip test would fail with a wap connection (AFAIK)

    Thank you
    Peter

Phones which do not have SocketConnection (and no TCP/IP) will use a WAP connection for HTTP. Nokia phones which have TCP/IP + Developer Platform 2 use a Internet connection and this preffered access point.

Anyway, does the tool work on your Nokia 6230i T-Mobile Germany? If yes, you have a threading problem.

Re: SocketConnection - works only in the emulator :-(

    Hi Peter,

I'm having the same problems with my 5140 / Vodafone Germany constellation. My midlets hang at the connection step...

    socket = (SocketConnection)Connector.open("socket://my.host.com:7766",Connector.READ_WRITE);

until they finally throw an IOException. Have you already found a solution to the problem?
