HttpConnection and SocketConnection are very slow on E60

    Hello,

I have been trying to crack this for days now.
Part of a Benchmarking tool i am writing times HTTP requests (and responses).
I have an E60 connected to the internet through UMTS.
The download speed for HttpRequests should be around 20-25 KB per second.
This was checked by running the Midlet in the sun WTK Emulator and using the E60 as a modem.
However when i run the midlet on the E60 it only manages around 11 KB per second.
Tried writing my own HTTP implementation based on the SocketConnection, but that didn't do any good. If anything the download speed got worse.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance,
    Robin

    Well...
i have the vodafone access point in my Access point list and choose it when using the midlet. My Web browser also uses the same access point.

Your comment suggests that an access point has settings that make ik GPRS or UMTS. If so, where can i see that?
The Telco (vodafone) informs me that the phone switches to UMTS automatically if it's available (and it is - i see the 3G symbol on the screen).

    Regards,
    Robin

Found a setting to disable GSM (GPRS) network and only allow UMTS network.
Tested it, same results. The HttpConnection is still about half as fast as i expected (+- 11KB per second).

    hi Robin,
how have you performing that benchmark part? can you validate results againts different device (same platform),
at least connections speed peaks (up/down) can be viewed on device using ConnectionManager application - it list all existing connections no matter which application initialized them (java, pc suite client, browser),

    regards,
    Peter

A 50 KB file is read from a server.
I benchmark the connection speed by reading System time before setting up the connection and comparing it to System time after the last byte is read from the response.

When i look at the connection manager data it starts off slow and builds up to roughly 15KB per second before the file is downloaded (running the Midlet on the E60). I get the impression that the Midlet is eating resources that the network io needs?
