    WLAN without SIM Card

    Hi,
is it possible to use the WLANbased Handys llike N80/91/93 for software testing (Symbian and Java) without a SIMCard? I would like to test some network based software on the device, but don't want to use UMTS or GPS for this. Does the phone automatcally choose WLAN then? And can the specific phones be operated without a SIMcard?

    Thanks
    Mik

Sure (the phones work fine without a SIM, except for making calls or sending/receiving SMS, MMS or other mobile network dependent functions).

Thanks for the answer. That's good to hear.
Can you tell me something about how WLAN is integrated:
Does it autmatically log into prefered WLAN Networks, when it is in reach?

    Thanks again

    Re: WLAN without SIM Card

For Eseries devices with WLAN (E61, E70, etc.) there's a concept called Access Point Groups where the connectivity switches automatically between cellular networks and selected WLAN access points depending on availability.

With Nseries phones (N93, N80, etc.) there is no similar thing. So, any application needing network access either has a default access point it uses, or it pops up a list of available access points or WLAN networks for the user to choose from.

Additionally, these Access Point Groups work for native E-Mail client and native SyncML data synchronization only. Forget these groups. Some applications, again not all, allow Always Ask and even some native Nokia applications like Chat do not allow WLAN access at all. A terrible mess, when you ask me.

Additionally, I had have a lot of problems with WLAN without SIM when the network is hidden. It was near to unusable. It has gotten better when using a SIM – do not ask me why – and it got much better when the WLAN has not been hidden.
