RE: What are the benefits of using the platform instead of GSM terminals?

Cost savings: faster development, less application development risk, optimisation of the wireless bearer and easy management, provide cost savings during the entire lifecycle of the customer's M2M solution.

Easier development: the Nokia M2M Platform hides networking complexity. SW developers see normal method calls between remote applications and the control and management server.

Faster development: the Nokia M2M Platform provides the protocol layers required. SW developers can concentrate on the application when protocols are hidden.

Less risk: network hiding and tested platform lessen the development project risk.

Wireless bearer choice: The M2M Platform supports major wireless access methods such as GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and SMS (Short Message Service) and others. Usability of certain bearers depends on the capabilities of the telecom network and the terminals, which are used. More wireless access methods will be implemented according to requirements in M2M markets. Costs for application communications can be optimised by choosing the appropriate bearer.

Standard wireless network: The Nokia M2M Platform uses standard GSM network technology. Widespread and well-known GSM technology provides a robust technical background, while multiple manufacturers and network operators guarantee economic pricing.

Backwards compatibility: With the Nokia M2M Platform, terminal replacement and upgrading for newer versions of Nokia GSM Connectivity Terminals are easy.

Openness: CORBA and Wireless CORBA -- The core of the M2M Platform -- are open standards. In addition, Nokia freely provides developers with technical information regarding Nokia GSM Connectivity Terminals interfaces and connectors.
