    Polyphonic Ringtones

Are midi program change messages supported in polyphonic ringtones? And is one channel (of the 4) always dedicated to percussion/drums?

Yes, MIDI program changes are supported in Nokia SP-MIDI enabled phones. In fact, you must have a program change at the start of the sequence for each MIDI channel you use, except MIDI Channel 10--this is always drums (unless you use a compicated SYSEX message to make it melodic instead).

As for the second part of your question: a 4-voice polyphonic phone does not support 4 channels! it supports 4 simultaneous notes. These can be on any channel 1-16. You can fill up all 16 channels if you like, but only 4 notes will ever sound at a time. How are these prioritized? That's where the SP part of SP-MIDI comes in. SP requires you to create what's called a MIP (mximum instantaneous polyphony) message. It's a SYSEX string that you paste into the start of your sequence. The phone knows how many voices it is capable of, and reads the instruction from the MIP.

This and other ringtone topics for musicians are covered in Headspace's Polyphonic Ringtone Workshops, hosted by yours truly. There's one coming up in Las Vegas, and one in Munich. For more information go to http://www.headspace.com/seminar2002.htm.

There's also a support group for Polyphonic composers at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/polytones.
