Please, explain how to send concatenated SMS

    Hi Developers,

I read the Nokia documents about concatenated SMS messages, checked the FAQs, searched the Web, but I still cannot send it successfully.
    Here is what I understood:
-I have to set TP-UDHI to 1 for all SMS parts
-I have to add before User Data five octets:
    00 - meaning concatenated SMS
    03 - data length
    xx - reference number
yy - number of SMS messages
zz - sequential number of current message
All above octets should be 7 bit coded. What about use data length? Should it be equal to user data only, or should it include also these 5 octets?
Can anyone send me a sample of sending such SMS messages step by step with detailed SMS parts - for dummies

    Thanks in advance...

RE: Please, explain how to send concatenated SMS

User data header octets are same both in 7 bit and 8 bit messages,
7 bit messages just have filler bits to fill to next 7 bit data
boundary of user data. User data length contains also user data
header, it has no knowledge of whether user data header exists or
not in the beginning of user data.

RE: Please, explain how to send concatenated SMS

    Hi,

Sending concanated SMS messages using CIMD interface are explained on the CIMD FAQ 6. (How do I send 8-bit data that is more than 160 octets long to a handset?).

Please find the tested example below how to send a WAP settings in two SMS in binary format (DSC value is set to 245):

RE: Please, explain how to send concatenated SMS

Thanks for your posts, but this still did not solve my problem. Maybe I presented it in a wrong way. What I want to do is to send a looong text message (not a ringtone, or vCal or anything like this - just plain text).
Please, tell me how the UDH should look like.

    Thanks.

Really, you should be able to figure this out by looking at the SmartMessaging FAQ (Main:Technologies:Messaging:Smart Messaging:FAQ), questions #7 and #18 -- aaah, but now I see your problem... The only samples we have where we include the concatenation bytes have been 8-bit versions. Good question -- have to look at this one a bit more. Or if someone else has already got this nailed, please speak up!

RE: Please, explain how to send concatenated SMS

    Hi paulbrow,

here is "live" sample of my problem. I am trying to send following (200 chars) text:
    12345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890

I am generating two 7-bit encoded messages:
    first:
    00D1000C914444444444440000A7A005000300020131D98C56B3DD7039584C36A3D56C375C0E1693CD6835DB0D9783C564335ACD76C3E56031D98C56B3DD7039584C36A3D56C375C0E1693CD6835DB0D9783C564335ACD76C3E56031D98C56B3DD7039584C36A3D56C375C0E1693CD6835DB0D9783C564335ACD76C3E56031D98C56B3DD7039584C36A3D56C375C0E1693CD6835DB0D9783C56433
    and the second:
    00D1000C914444444444440000A736050003000202B49AED86CBC162B219AD66BBE172B0986C46ABD96EB81C2C269BD16AB61B2E078BC966B49AED86CBC100

I am receiving it as one message on the phone (hurrah!) but instead of the message I can see only "bushes". Now the problem is encoding - what is wrong? Can anyone point me the right direction???

RE: Please, explain how to send concatenated SMS

    User data part:
    6 first octets
    050003000201
    seventh octet, data starts...
then 8 bits (character 1 presented in first 7 bit and last bit 0
is fill bit to seven bit boundary)
    01100010 h62
Here starts the 7 bit coding again since 8 7bit characters fit
into 7 octets exactly. So coding of 7 bit characters follows 7
    octet sequences. GSM spec 03.38.
    Next bits
    10110010 hb2
    xx011001
    yyyxxxxx
    zzzzyyyy
    aaaaazzz
    bbbbbbaa
    cccccccb
I hope this helps you to understand the coding.

Re: Please, explain how to send concatenated SMS

    Hi,

I have a similar problem with concatenated messages.

This is what I send to the modem:

    AT+CMGS=159
    07918379000005F151000B918379519477F90000AAA00500030F020154741914AFA7C76B9058FEBEBB41E6371EA4AEB7E173D0DB5E9683E8E832881DD6E741E4F71944459741F17A7ABC0689E5EFBB1B647EE341EA7A1B3E07BDED6539888E2E83D8617D1E447E9F4154741914AFA7C76B9058FEBEBB41E6371EA4AEB7E173D0DB5E9683E8E832881DD6E741E4F71944459741F17A7ABC0689E5EFBB1B647EE3416A

    AT+CMGS=45
    07918379000005F141000B918379519477F90000AA1D0500030F0202F5367C0E7ADBCB72101D5D06B1C3FA3C88FC3E03

And it returns an ERROR signal.

Can someone please explain what is the mistake?

    Thanks,
    jaggah

Re: Please, explain how to send concatenated SMS

    Hi, Pautamo,

Using your advise on how to build the UDH header, I'm able to cleanly build a multi-part (concatenated) SMS message complete with 7-bit encoding and all. However, sending it always fails regardless of whether I use text mode or PDU mode. Note: my gsm modem supports both 0 (PDU) and 1 (text) using AT+CMGF=X. But when sending the first part of a concatenated message, the modem simply returns "ERROR" without the error code, so I am unable to diagnose further.

My application is in Java on Win XP Pro and I am able to send and receive regular SMS as well as receive and decode VERY LONG SMS (tested up to 15parts). The function to build the outgoing concatenated SMS looks clean because the resulting messages look very much like the concatenated ones that I receive, complete with 7-bit encoding, UDH header with message ID, total count, sequence number, etc. There is also no problem with encoding/decoding between 7-bit and readable text with both bit-level functions I wrote. The conversions are clean with no loss of bits or characters. Appreciate any advise.

    Regards...

please make me clear that how we can send SMS or use ant other AT command in PDU mode with a simple appropriate example.

    plz reply soon

    Thanks

    hi,
    initially its tough..
but, once u understand, it will be easy sending thru PDU mode..
    Ex:
    set the mode in PDU,
AT+CMGF=0 the modem should respond ok...
    then,
    AT+CMGS=26
    >079119894800454432000C911989482651300000FF0DF3B29B0CA297E774D0BC3D07
this will send the message "send test sms"

07 is length of service center no.
    91 is the code
198948004544 is the service centre no.. in this case it is 919884005444
in which two digits r swapped.
32 is the first octet. which is 8 bit register, here i have set the status report request flag. if its a concatenated message, then UDHI is to be set, and the max.validity period is 255.
    00 is the message reference
0C is the destination no length
    91 is the code
next is the dest.no which is again digits r swapped
FF is the time zone, validity which is max.
0D is the user data length.
    and the rest is data.
the total length is calculated in the form of octects..

    hope it helps..
    sireesha.

Firstly u should know tht concataneted sms generally created in 8-bit DCS nt in 7-bit. here i m giving u an example which contains 3 parts..

    AT+CMGF=0
    AT+CMGS=Length

where XXXXX= ur 12 digit mobile number, where u want to send SMS.
0C indicates the length of ur number, here is 12 in dec, so 0C in Hex

now i m sure i'd b able to send concatanated SMS..
so lage raho... keep hoping-keep trying nd be SMILE

My receiving mobile phone doesn't appear to support 8-bit DCS mode. Does anyone have samples of enabling UDHI for 7-bit PDU messages? My messages are coming out garbled when I put the header in.
