    Exclamation Targetting different platforms

    Hi there,

It's been a long time since my last post.

I have to develop an app targetting almost all platforms in the market, I mean s60 and UIQ in all versions.

Since we don't want to have many versions, we would like to know the minimun number needed to target different processors and sdk versions. For example, is it possible to target all s60 phones using the older version of the SDK? same for UIQ?

If the answer is no, what about using an .exe? Our app could have a web user interface or even one made in J2me. So an option is to develop a server and deploy it in almost all targets.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Targetting different platforms

    Hi,

In general how many versions you need will depend on what features/APIs your application is using and whether those APIs have retained binary compatibility across platform versions.

However, the answer is definitely no - you can't have one version for all S60 and one version for all UIQ. The latest versions of S60 (3rd onwards) and UIQ have a complete binary break from previous versions with the introduction of platform security and a new ARM Tool Chain (RVCT). You would probably also have to consider the impact of the scalable UI and different screen resolutions introduced in S60 2nd FP3(?).

Your .exe solution could help but will definitley not get around the complete binary break introduced by Symbian (OS v9 onwards).

Note that it is also a break in source code compatibility in nearly all cases (applications are now .exes and not .apps, there are some differences there) and there are a lot of posts about the issues in porting to 3rd in the forums as well as some documents available from Nokia.

Hope that helps, even if it wasn't the good news you wanted.

    Hi,
This is not possible. You should create your .app file for all platforms.
    For example,
    For Nokia S60,
OS version 6.1s, 7.0s,8.0,8.1,9.0 etc available..
    And, UIQ also different.
So, for every platform you have to develop your application seperate.
