Overview

Nokia devices provide different possibilities for changing the default installation folder of MIDlets.

Description

In Series 40 1st and 2nd Edition, MIDlets are by default installed to Application | Collection. For MIDlets downloaded and installed over the air, the Application | Games folder can be chosen by defining Nokia-MIDlet-Category:Game in the JAD file. With any other value than Game this attribute will be ignored and the application will be installed into the default location, Collection.

In other platforms it is not possible to specify the installation folder in the JAD file. Instead, the user can define the folder for the MIDlet icon:

In Series 40 3rd Edition and later, MIDlets are by default installed to Applications. The user can move the MIDlet location within the Application menu.

For MIDlets downloaded and installed over-the-air, the user can set Automatic Saving OFF (from Web application | Downloading Settings) if he or she wants to choose the installation folder for each installed MIDlet separately. If the setting is ON, they will be installed to the default folder, i.e. to the Application menu root (Series 40 3rd Edition) or the Games folder (Series 40 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 1 or later).

In addition, there may be operator variant-specific settings.

In S60 2nd Edition and later, MIDlets are installed to the default folder (root menu, or from S60 2nd FP2 onwards to MyOwn or Installations). The user can move the MIDlet icons to any folder.

In Series 80 2nd Edition, the user is asked to choose the folder in the installation phase, and it can also be changed later.

In S60 1st Edition, all MIDlets are installed to 'Applications' folder and it is not possible to move them.

Solution

In Series 40 1st and 2nd Edition, the Application | Games folder can be chosen using the Nokia-MIDlet-Category:Game attribute in the JAD file.

In other platforms, it is not possible to specify the installation folder in the JAD file. Instead, the user can define the folder for the MIDlet icon (excluding S60 1st Edition).
