Introduction

The term "gaming services" in this article refers to supporting services for game development with features such as leaderboards, achievements, cloud services, server services for real-time multiplayer games, in-application advertising utils, in-application purchase enablers and so forth. The services include APIs, developer documentation and sometimes special development environments. The "gaming services" are not game development frameworks, i.e. you don't use them to implement the games themselves. However, the services do sometimes provide plug-ins for popular game development frameworks such as Unity.

Since Nokia X phones do not support Google Play Services - except for the few features such as Google AdMob and Google Analytics, which do not require Google Play Services to be installed on the phone - Google Play Game Services is not supported either. However, there is a significant number of, often cross-platform, gaming services and frameworks available. Many of these third party services are affordable and in many cases free, especially for indie developers, and still rich with features. Furthermore, you can still utilise Nokia X specific APIs, such as Nokia In-App Payment, together with the gaming services.

This article lists the features and pricing and some key details of a few popular and emerging gaming services. Note that this is not a definitive list and many other services exist or are being created. In fact, if you happen to find a gaming service, which is compatible with Android Open Source Project (AOSP) 4.1.2, you can be quite confident that it also works on Nokia X.

The pricing details of the services are subject to change. Verify the pricing from the corresponding websites.

Summary

Despite the lack of Google Play Game Services, a number of alternative solutions exist when developing games for Nokia X. Although the default in-app payment and push notifications solutions provided by the services are not usually supported on Nokia X, implementing the features using the Nokia X specific APIs (Nokia In-App Payment and Nokia Notifications) is easy. It is worth noting that OpenIAB already support Nokia X (Nokia In-App Payment) including the OpenIAB plug-in for Unity so no additional effort, except for creating the items to Nokia Store backend, is required.
