Use the KAppIsHidden flag in your application registration file. Hidden applications run in the background. They are not shown to the user and do not appear in the application launcher or in the embeddable applications list. The default value is KAppNotHidden.

From Symbian OS v9 (S60 3rd Edition)

The value is defined in the APP_REGISTRATION_INFO resource structure.

RESOURCE APP_REGISTRATION_INFO {
app_file=”hello_0xE67432E1″;
localisable_resource_file = qtn_loc_resource_file_1;
localisable_resource_id = R_LOCALISABLE_APP_INFO;
embeddability=KAppNotEmbeddable;
newfile=KAppDoesNotSupportNewFile;
hidden=KAppIsHidden;
}

Prior to Symbian OS v9 (S60 1st Edition and S60 2nd Edition)

Here the value is defined in the RESOURCE AIF_DATA

RESOURCE AIF_DATA
{
app_uid=...;
num_icons=2;
embeddability=KAppNotEmbeddable;
newfile=KAppDoesNotSupportNewFile;
hidden=KAppIsHidden;
}
