Ltama - Custom templetes
Great article, thank you for the useful information! Now, it would be nice to know if there is a way to create custom Live Tile templates or utilize some kind of custom paint methods. In other words, I am wondering whether we are limited to the three basic templates mentioned in this article or we are allowed to create our own tiles with custom content.

SB Dev -
@Ltama: You can simply render an Image of the right dimensions and apply it to a FlipTile. If you don't provide anything to the backside properties of a flip-tile it won't flip. This means you can use it to display a static image which is made up any way you want it to. What you can't do is define your own templates with regards to animation (e.g. a Cycle Tile Template that scrolls images from left to right instead of from bottom to the top). For rendering your own images you might want to look into the WritableBitmap class and the WritableBitmapEx project (which has some great extensions for the WritableBitmap).
