Qt for Maemo - getting to the fast-lane is one of several Qt presentations by Pekka Kosonen available on slideshare.com. This slideset was presented at the Qt developer days October 13th.

Qt is the open source framework that allows developers to write one set of code and natively deploy it on several platforms including S60 and Maemo based devices.

As a person selling applications, it is good that this independent group is reviewing and bringing to notice these applications. These applications are something you may never have heard about but are cool to have. .

I invite you to take a look; the reviews are cool and unbiased. As a developer you should know they are not limited to big developer houses but highlight the small independent distributor. If the Widget or app is cool and in the Ovi store, they will promote it.

Win an N97 in the Nokia Developer Wiki Review an Article Contest Sep 1st, 2009

You can win an N97 multimedia device by giving your approval to one or more Wiki articles you judged to be accurate, reliable and well written. The purpose of this competition is to provide additional feedback pointing out high quality articles that are tested by the community. With this information non-members and new developers will be able to trust the code examples and articles with the designated Reviewers Approved Thumbs Up. If in doubt they may read the comments that explain why they were reviewer approved.

Anyone that creates a review has a chance to win. One device will be awarded randomly to someone that positively rates an article with review comments. Of course those with the most quality reviews will be the winners but everyone has a chance to win. At least five Nokia N97 are to be awarded for this contest that starts 00:01 September 1st, 2009 until 11:59 September 30th, 2009.

Please read the Rules of Participation as well as the Wiki reviewer instructions for full information on requirements, how to review and mark an article. As well as contest judging criteria.

New S60 Browser 7.1 includes Flash Lite 3.0 and other enhancements Jul 23rd, 2009


Nokia has introduced S60 Browser 7.1. This new mobile browser is based on WebKit 525, and adds features and updates contributed by Nokia and other members of the WebKit open source community.

For developers the introduction of S60 Browser 7.1 delivers full support for Flash Lite 3.0. It also extends support for S60 Platform Services to selected S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2 devices.

The new browser is pre-loaded in these S60 3.2.3 devices: Nokia 6710 Navigator, Nokia 6730 classic, Nokia N86 8MP device, Nokia E52 messaging device, Nokia E55 messaging device, and Nokia E72 device. Other selected S60 3.2.3 devices will gain S60 Browser 7.1 through firmware updates.

Early versions of S60 Browser 7.1 were released without support for onKeyPress to capture select and navigation key events. This omission affects both web and WRT widget code. Later versions of the browser will correct this omission.

The month of June has flown by and we’ve got some winners for the Mobile Design wiki challenge part 2!

Overall, it’s been great to see the variety of information you have been contributing to the community! It’s been great to see some new faces, as well as to see some of our regular contributors flexing to meet our new challenges! |} We’re pleased to announce that the winners of brand new, shiny N97 devices are:

jappit for his well stuctured mobile web patterns, and for an extensive and highly valuable series of WRT articles, including 7 JavaScript WRT components, 2 example Widgets for existing websites, and 13 other highly interesting WRT articles. Check all the mobile design articles by Jappit >>

Alen Alebic - The GridMenu Component for Flash Lite is a great example of mobile specific implementation of a familiar component that can easily be utilized in any application.

JasperJager - The Kinetic Scroll Component for Flash Lite displays in a nice way how to utilize the interaction possibilities of the touch screen. Using this component surely will save time.

kamaljaiswal - Kamaljaiswal did a really great job with Themes:S60 UI Components and other themes articles, creating a lot of new valuable resources for themes!

mayankkedia - Mayankkedia has written a plethora of articles of which the Listbox Usability is one good example. Also the improvements to many existing articles, and spicing up numerous earlier text only based articles with illustrative visuals, such as Colors in User Interface, have been noted.

Aadhar14b - Nice articles, such as Information Visualization For Mobile Applications with a lot of images and out of the box thinking was what won the N97 for Aadhar14b

We want to thank everyone who participated- considering this is a new area we’re exploring for the wiki, you guys have certainly stepped up to meet the challenge, and the results have been great. We look forward to seeing you all contributing to the community also in the future!

Congratulations to May Mobile Design Challenge Winners! June 4th, 2009

The month of May has flown by and we’ve got some winners for the May Mobile Design wiki challenge!

We’re pleased to announce that the winner of the CS4 Web Premium software and a brand new shiny 5800 Xpress music device is croozeus , Pankaj Nathani, who contributed great patterns such as fly out menus and application layouts.

Two more 5800 Xpress devices are going out to Feliperodrigues and prakash.raman , who also stepped up with some great contributions! Keep an eye on your mailbox you two, you should be getting them soon. Special recognition goes out to Yiibu, who kicked off the challenge with some extremely informative and inspirational patterns!

We want to thank everyone who participated- considering this is a new area we’re exploring for the wiki, you guys have certainly stepped up to meet the challenge, and the results have been great. We look forward to seeing you all (and more!) participate in this month’s Mobile Design Challenge part 2!

Four Winners of the "Edit and Win" Wiki competition Apr 16th, 2009

It is with great pleasure to announce the four winners of the March Wiki Edit contest. The first overall winner is savaj with his many useful and insightful edits on the Wiki. First runner-up overall was mind_freak who seemed to have spent all his free time polishing up articles. Since we felt it was not fair to have Nokia Developer champions competing against the general contributors, kamaljaiswal was selected as a winner among the Nokia Developer champions. dougcn edited many articles this month through translations and he was the fourth winner of the editing contest.

"Edit and Win" Wiki competition - Win a New Nokia Multimedia Device March 5th, 2009

Win a Nokia S60 devices such as the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic or other device of your choice simply by improving the current Wiki articles. You can even edit your own articles as well as others' to participate. Help us improve Nokia Developer Wiki now and win.

The rules are simple; Edit by addition of material or correcting inaccuracies or formatting to a more standard look any Wiki article. All articles edited during the time period will be subjectively judged on how well they are edited, what if any additional content is and the number of Edits during the month. Minor edits will not be counted and frivolous edits will be penalized. The top contributors will win a new Nokia device based on availability the first of April. Only Edits during the contest period 00:01 GMT March 3, 2009 to 23:59 March 31, 2009 will be judged for this contest.

Prizes awarded depend on availability for order on April 1st, 2009. See Rules of Participation for full contest rules.


Nitin SuperByte from Community Contributor to Nokia Employee Feb 20th, 2009

Good Job!


I would like to congratulate Nitin SuperByte - Nitin Srivastava the most recent of many community contributors who have been hired by Nokia; in part by their activity on the Nokia Developer community. By contributing to the developers community through Wiki articles or discussion board activity a member shows his work ethics, his knowledge and his communication skills not only to Nokia senior engineers but to other perspective employers.

Although the best reward for helping someone else is that surge of adrenalin you get when someone replies “Wow I got it, thanks I don’t know what I’d have done without you”. There are other long term rewards, Poster of the Month and Contributor of the Month awards, Wiki Moderator and Nokia Developer Champion Status and even on occasion jobs with Nokia.


Nokia and Adobe Launch $10 Million Open Screen Project Fund Feb 20th, 2009

At the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Nokia and Adobe Systems announced the creation of the $10 million Open Screen Project fund, which is designed to help developers create applications and services for mobile, desktop, and consumer electronics devices using the Adobe Flash platform.

Present your Application at Mobile World Congress January 19th, 2009

Do you have an exciting Symbian OS application based on S60 5.x that you want to show off to the world? If so then Symbian Foundation are giving you the opportunity to present your application on the Symbian Foundation stand at Mobile World Congress next month.

Qt will be available under LGPL January 15th, 2009

Nokia today announced that its Qt cross-platform User Interface (UI) and application framework for desktop and embedded platforms will be available under the Lesser General Public License (LGPL) version 2.1 license from the release of Qt 4.5. The Qt will now be available from the new domain, www.qtsoftware.com.


This move will provide open source and commercial developers with more permissive licensing and increase flexibility for developers. In addition, Qt source code repositories will be made publicly available and will encourage contributions from desktop and embedded developer communities. With these changes, developers will be able to actively drive the evolution of the Qt framework.
