Series 40 is Nokia's platform for mass market featurephones - at time of writing there are more than one billion in use worldwide. Apps are primarily written using [[:Category:Java ME|Java ME]], which provides deep and broad access to platform functionality. If youf you're writing apps to interact with a web service, [http://www.developer.nokia.com/Develop/Web/Series_40_web_apps/ Series 40 web apps] provide a compelling alternative development framework (these run in [http://www.developer.nokia.com/Develop/Web/Nokia_Browser_for_Series_40/ Nokia Web Browser for Series 40] but look like native apps and can be sold through Nokia Store). Content also represents an opportunity, such as various media types and the creation of UI themes.

Announcements.pngNokia Asha software platform (10 May 2013): Series 40 has evolved into the Nokia Asha software platform with a brand new UI and a number of new Java ME APIs. To see both (all) Nokia Asha and Series 40 content check out the new entry point: Category:Nokia Asha.

The Nokia Asha platform is largely compatible with Series 40. As a result, while we'll be asking for your help to validate articles against the new platform and devices, you can still assume that most recent Java ME and Web Apps articles will remain accurate.
