Total Bit Rate

Total Bit Rate is a term used to define the bit rate associated with streamed content consisting of multiple media type. The Total Bit Rate differs from the sum of content bit rates by the overhead of data needed to encapsulate the media.

For example, a streamed TV program may consists of a video and audio stream. If the video is streamed at 288kps and the audio at 64kbps it may appear that the resulting bit rate is 252kbps, however the data required to encapsulate the stream results in a higher total bit rate.
