Nokia Future /Capture Contest FAQs

1. What is Nokia Future /Capture?

Nokia Future /Capture is a competition that challenges developers to come up with creative, imaging-focused apps and hacks that make the most of the Nokia Lumia 1020.

2. Why should I participate in Nokia Future /Capture?

It’s an amazing opportunity for you to push the limits of imaging technology and showcase your development skills to the world. And you will of course have the chance of winning prizes and enjoying great experiences.

3. Is the competition open to anyone? What are the requirements to enter?

The competition is open to all developers worldwide. All you need to do is come up with creative ideas for imaging apps and hacks and have strong development skills.

4. Where and when can I enter the Nokia Future /Capture competition?

You can enter the competition on www.developer.nokia.com/futurecapture. Submissions will remain open until July 31, 2013.

5. What do I need to submit?

You need to submit your ideas for apps and hacks for the Nokia Lumia 1020. The ideas need to be creative and imaging-related; you may also make use of peripherals.

All you need to provide is a short description of what you’re planning to create and a high level explanation of how you’d do it.

You can also support your submission with additional materials that help explain more clearly what you’re planning to create; this might help the judges to better understand your idea and possibly increase your chances of being selected.

You will also need to provide your development credentials, as this is not just about ideas but also a development competition. You can provide your developer credentials by providing your Publisher GUID from Windows Phone Store, sending links to apps that you have in any mobile app store, files, designs, other relevant work, etc.

6. Can I submit a creative idea that is not imaging related, but that still pushes the limits of Nokia Lumia 1020?

You will not be selected as a finalist to go to the Hackathon if your idea isn’t imaging-related, as that’s the focus of this competition. But we encourage you to develop your app and publish it in Windows Phone Store.

7. Do I have more chances of winning if I submit a hack or if I submit an app?

Your chances are the same.

8. I have an idea and need help sourcing some of the peripherals. Can Nokia help me?

No, you will need to take care of sourcing everything you need to make your idea a reality. And note that if you are selected and need to bring something special to Sweden, you will need to take care of all the logistics and paperwork that may be necessary.

9. Can I submit an idea that I have already developed?

No, this is a contest for new ideas, which you will then code at the Hackathon if you’re selected as one of the 10 finalists.

10. Will my ideas be made public?

No, they will not; you will submit them into a private database and other developers won’t be able to see them. We will keep the ideas secret and you will retain the intellectual property (IP) rights.

11. Can I submit more than one idea? How do I re-submit new ideas?

Absolutely! You are able to submit up to 3 ideas. The more ideas you submit, the more chances you will have of being selected.

Once you have registered with Nokia Future /Capture you will be able to log into the system at any time to polish and edit your idea(s), submit more ideas, etc. You can access your ideas portal via the Enter button on developer.nokia.com/futurecapture.

12. How will my ideas be judged?

A group of Nokia representatives, including members of the global and local Nokia Developer teams, and Nokia imaging experts will select the 10 best ideas. Ideas will be judged based on creativity and how well they harness the capabilities of the Nokia Lumia 1020 and the Nokia Imaging SDK.

13. How and when will the 10 selected finalists be announced?

If you win, you will get an email communicating this to you. We will also post the names of the winners on the Nokia Future /Capture site via a blog post.

If you are one of the finalists, we will get in touch to help you sort out all the details for your trip to the exclusive Hackathon in Sweden.

14. Can I participate with someone else?

You can participate in the Hackathon on your own or with one colleague. We will cover the flight and hotel for a maximum of 2 people, both of whom need to have an active role during the Hackathon.

15. Are all my costs to and in Sweden covered?

We will cover the costs of the flight and hotel for a maximum of 2 people. In most cases, we will just cover 2 hotel nights. We will not be covering other travel costs or subsistence besides what’s provided at the actual Hackathon event. Don’t worry, there will be food and drinks there.

16. What happens if am selected as finalist but can’t make it to Sweden?

Unfortunately, if this happens we will need to select the runner up and you will lose your seat at the Hackathon and your chance of winning.

17. How is the Hackathon winner selected? Will I need to have finished my app in order to be able to win?

We will be looking at creativity, user experience and quality when judging the apps and hacks at the Hackathon. Creations should be as polished and as close to final as possible at the end of the weekend.

18. What does the Hackathon winner get?

The Hackathon winner will get a Nokia Lumia 1020 and an expenses paid trip to a Nokia event, with VIP treatment and the opportunity to showcase the winning creation to the world. The winning app will also be promoted via several Nokia channels and Windows Phone store.
